Responsible AI for One Health Grants

The Centre for Advancing Responsible and Ethical Artificial Intelligence (CARE-AI) and the One Health Institute (OHI) at U of G was created to bridge disciplinary boundaries, integrating knowledge and research to address complex health challenges.

CARE-AI integrates ethics, governance and social responsibility with technical leadership. Drawing on over 90 faculty members, CARE-AI researchers apply artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to U of G strengths, including human and animal health, environmental sciences, agriculture, agri-food, business, insurance and the bio-economy. We also develop methodologies, including learning algorithms, human-computer interfaces, data analytics, sensors and robotics while ensuring that these new platforms are safe and benefit humanity.

OHI encourages researchers, students and the public to take a broad, inclusive view of complex problems like global climate change, health inequalities, zoonotic disease and the pandemic spread of disease. One Health recognizes that the health of humans, animals and the environment are interconnected. The health and wellbeing of one component ripples through all three pillars. To achieve optimal health for people, we must integrate and account for the health and wellbeing of animals as well as natural, social and constructed environments.

CARE-AI and OHI have launched a collaborative SEED FUND to:

  • Enhance the competitiveness of new external operating grant applications submitted by U of G faculty members, with an emphasis on tri-council grant applications, and
  • Promote student learning across multiple research disciplines.

The research may extend locally, nationally and/or globally to attain optimal health for people, animals, plants and our environment through the application of AI methodologies, applications and responsibilities.

Our CARE-AI and OHI SEED FUND include Responsible AI for One Health Grants.

  • Responsible AI for One Health Grants supports the formation of interdisciplinary research collaborations that have the potential to achieve recognition on the national or international stage, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of new Tri-council grant applications by U of G faculty. CARE-AI and OHI will jointly provide up to $18,593 per year (equivalent to a GRA stipend plus benefits) for up to 2 years to support a student engaged in a novel research initiative that will identify, integrate and/or expand the role for responsible AI in the context of optimal health for people, animals, plants and our environment.
